Jeffrey Alan Stein

Dr. Jeffrey Alan Stein died May 3, 2025. Jeffrey was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 19, 1940. to Max and Bertha Stein.

After preparing at Jamaica high School in Jamaica, NY, Jeffrey received an A.B. cum laude in biochemical sciences from Harvard College where he was a member of Dunster House and the Class of 1960. In 1965, Jeffrey received his M.S. cum laude from Harvard Medical School.

Jeffrey practiced Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology for over 50 years at New York-Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he was an Emeritus Professor of Medicine. Respected by colleagues and adored by patients for his expert care and thoughtful bedside manner, Dr. Stein saved countless lives and healed thousands more.

Dr. Stein, also known to family and friends as "Poppy" and "Doc," is survived by his wife Diane H. Schafer, children Jonathan and Pamela Frankel Stein, Sara (Stein) and Mark Richman, and brothers Ethan and Matthew Stein. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jacob, Eliot, Abigail Stein, Lindsay, and Jessica Richman.

Jeffrey’s greatest passions were his family, practicing medicine, teaching medical students, playing tennis, reading, and chocolate.

A memorial service will be planned for a future date. Donations in his honor can be made to the
Alzheimer's Association and Caring Kind.
