Sven prepared at Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY and from which he graduated with honors and was awarded a four-year scholarship to study engineering and applied physics at Harvard College. He was a member of the Harvard Class of 1960 and Lowell House and received his A.B. cum laude in 1960 and, then, in 1966, an M.A. from Boston University.
Sven worked at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Sven married Heli Linnamagi on February 12, 1965. They had three children: Tarmo Paul who predeceased Sven in 2019; Aili Rina and Ingrid Linda. Sven and Heli divorced in 1987. Sven married Eena-Mai Franz on April 27, 1996.
