Clyde Edward Black

Dr. Clyde Edward Black passed away peacefully in Anniston, Alabama on January 13, 2023, at the age of 84. Clyde was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 29, 1938, to Edward Wiley and Josie Aaron Black.

After graduating early from Phillips High School in Bear Creek, AL Clyde attended Harvard College on academic scholarship. He was a member of Dunster House and the Harvard Class of 1960. While at Harvard, though graduating in 1960 with an A.B.as a Philosophy major and German minor, Clyde decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended The University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, and while there met his wife of 57 years, Evelyn, who was finishing nursing school at the University of Alabama as well. After graduating from medical school in 1965, Clyde enlisted as a navy medical officer and served time with the Marine Corps in Vietnam before completing residency training and a chief residency in radiology.

Clyde had a love of medicine and helping others. He was an engaged member of the medical community in Anniston, Alabama, where he practiced for over 30 years, and is a past president of the Calhoun County Medical Society.

Clyde was known for his kind, generous, patient and gentle manner, serving not only as a colleague but also as a friend and mentor to many. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, sharing with everyone his love of philosophy, literature, music, the family dogs and Alabama football, of which he was a donor and season ticket holder since 1965. A longstanding member of First Presbyterian Church, he served multiple terms as an elder and taught Sunday school for many years. After retiring from radiology practice, Clyde devoted his time to enjoying travel, college football and spending time with friends and family, particularly enjoying his role of "Poppy" to his three grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Winslow Black; his three children, Edward Black, Eric Black and Dr. Allison Black Gregg (Timothy); three grandchildren, Winslow "Sutton", William "Palmer", Clara; and sister, Elizabeth Black Sartain.

A funeral service was held on January 19, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church of Anniston followed by a graveside committal service at Edgemont Cemetery.
