Lynn David Poole

Lynn David Poole died on March 7, 2023 in McLean, Virginia. Born May 9, 1939 and raised in Detroit, Lynn, after preparing at Detroit Country Day School, went to Harvard College where was a member of Leverett House and the Harvard Class of 1960. Lynn received an A.B. cum laude degree, majoring in government. Following graduation, he did a two-year tour of duty with the Navy, returning to obtain a law degree (LL.B. 1965) from Harvard Law School. Upon passing the Michigan Bar, he did a clerkship with Judge George Edwards of the United States Court of Appeals. Then, Lynn had a short stint with Kirkland and Ellis, a Washington DC law firm, where he acquired a taste for labor law.

Several years after obtaining an LL M degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1970, Lynn began his next chapter with a thirty-five year career at the United States Postal Service, including two years heading its New York City Office of Labor Law, where he handled trial advocacy, appellate advocacy, labor negotiations and mediation with aplomb.

He married Barbara (Manzke), a former librarian with St. Stephens and St. Agnes Schools in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1967. They lived in Alexandria for well over fifty years, where they raised their two sons, Geoffrey and Ted. While being a loving father and grandfather, when friends faced difficulties, he was always there with wise counsel and support.

Lynn had classical music in his bones, loved a good game of chess, enjoyed reading, followed his Detroit sports teams and was an avid collector of antique coins and books.

His last years were marked by myriad health problems and exceptionally devoted care by Barbara. Besides Barbara, Geoffrey and Ted and their wives, Maria and Paola, Lynn is survived by two grandsons Matteo and Tiago and two granddaughters, Maya and Alma.

A memorial service will be held May 6 in Alexandria Virginia.
