John R. Scullin

SCULLIN, John (Jack) Robert, a longtime resident of Cotuit, Newton, and Boston, MA, died January 26th, 2022, while out on his morning exercise walk in Cotuit, MA.

Born in Boston, August 16, 1938, John grew up in Newton Centre and summered on the North Shore with his three brothers, Phillip, Noel, and Albee, and his sister, Dorsey Cabot. John spent his youth racing Rhodes 19 sailboats and the family boat "Pitch In" at the Manchester and Eastern Yacht Clubs. Later, he was a member of the Union Boat Club in Boston where he played squash.

John attended the Fessenden School in Newton, MA, Exeter Academy (1956) and Harvard University (A.B. 1960). While at Harvard, John was a member of Kirkland House and the Porcellian Club, and sang tenor in the Harvard Glee Club. In the 1960s, John was a charter member of the Boston Cantata singers with whom he performed for 25 years. In the 1990s and 2000s, John sang with the Boston Cecilia and most recently, he sang with the Chatham Chorale on Cape Cod.

John became an investment advisor working at Dean Witter, Smith Barney, and Kidder Peabody. He later branched out with partners Stuart Hench and Brian McKenney to co-find the investment advisory firm, Beacon Investments, in Boston, MA that continues to serve clients to this day.

On the Cape, John found peace in the beauty of the marshes and sunsets. Some of his fondest memories were of large family gatherings beginning in 1988 and culminating in his 80th birthday party in 2018. Perhaps the best times for him were the ones where he could be alone on a walk, surrounded by the beauty of the Cape, with his rescued canine friends Luke, Maddie, Lizzie, Scarlett, Chucky, and Savannah.

John was predeceased by his parents, Matthew P. Scullin, his mother, Dorothy Purcell Scullin, and his brothers. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Jan, daughter, Robin Scullin (Brent Matherly) of Annapolis, MD, son, John Scullin (Daphne) of Haverford, PA, stepson, Clark McAdams (Diane) of Wethersfield, CT, grandchildren, Tom, Charlotte, and Bela Scullin, Shannon Castellanos, Jennifer Ahrens, and Nathan Gerdes; his sister, Dorsey Cabot (Walter) of Dedham, MA, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
