 Professor Bruce Langworthy Chalmers, of Riverside, California died December 11, 2015.
Chalmers was a Professor of Mathematics at UC Riverside, 1967-2008. He was a graduate of Philips Exeter Academy, 1956; of Harvard University - Kirkland, A.B. cum laude (mathematics) 1960; of Syracuse University, M.S. 1963; and of Stanford University, PhD 1967.
Born in Dubuque, Iowa, to Dorothy and John Chalmers and preceded in death by them and his brother Prof. Douglas Chalmers. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Ploessl) Chalmers; daughters Cynthia Bartlett and Heather Singarella; grandchildren Cameron, Jackson and Dylan Bartlett, and Nicholas, Natalie and Juliette Singarella; sisters Prof. Diane Johnson and Candace Bickford; and many nieces and nephews.
Bruce enjoyed mathematics, especially his field of Approximation Theory, publishing numerous papers, lecturing at many universities here and abroad, and researching and authoring with several colleagues.
A charming, caring and humble man, Bruce was an inspirational mentor and a sports enthusiast. He had a clever sense of humor with an outlook on life that was always optimistic. Bruce was as proud of his daughters and their husbands, John and Paul, respectively, as they were of him. He was adored and revered by his six grandchildren who called him "Popoo," and he was their biggest fan.
For 55 years, he was devoted to his wife, Patti, and together they enjoyed many travels around the globe, but most of all, they enjoyed the love of their family.
Bruce fought a decade-long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) which ultimately took his life at Sunrise Senior Living in Riverside, CA.
The family is very appreciative of the professional and loving care given by the staff and by Vitas during his three years of residence there.
