Prescott Evarts, Jr.

 

prescott-evartsPrescott Evarts Jr. 79, passed away in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune on August 28, 2017. He was born in New York City to the late Prescott and Elizabeth (Bates) Evarts. He lived in New York City and spent summers in Windsor, Vermont until moving to Monmouth County in 1966.

Prescott attended Buckley School in NYC, Saint Paul's School in Concord, NH, Harvard University where he received a BA in Greek History and Literature and Columbia University receiving his PhD in English Literature. He has been a Professor of English at Monmouth University since 1966. While a student at Harvard, as a freshman, he won the boxing championship and was on the football team.

Prescott was a member of the Society of Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a member of the Green's Pond Harriers and the Shore Athletic Club. He loved to run and had successfully completed 17 marathons.

He loved spending time with family and friends and writing poetry. Prescott is survived by his beloved wife Janine (Gaubert) Evarts of 54 years, his brother, John Evarts, Hawaii, his two loving sons Christopher Evarts, Philadelphia, Geoffrey Evarts and his wife Jill, Middletown. Also, surviving are his adoring grandchildren Sylvie, Tatum and William.

A visitation took place on Friday, September 1, 2017. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ Episcopal Church, Middletown, NJ on September 2, 2017, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Prescott's memory to the Upper Valley Land Trust in Hanover, NH (uvlt.org).
