ROGOFF, Jerome H., MD, died on June 1, 2017, at home in Waban, among loved ones. Deeply missed and dearly loved, Jerry was noted for his charisma, intellect, knowledge, integrity, exuberance and passion for life.
Born in Detroit to immigrant parents, he pilgrimed to Harvard College and, after a two-year post as a Peace Corps doctor in Kathmandu, settled in Boston. After his psychiatric residency, he built and served for 19 years as chief of in-patient psychiatry at Faulkner Hospital. groundbreaking unit widely recognized for its high-level care and excellent training, it became an anchor teaching hospital.
He derived profound joy from the therapeutic work with patients he treated over decades. In later years, he served as President of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society and Assembly leader of the American Psychiatric Association. He was a pioneer as an expert witness in forensic psychiatry, culminating in work for the Innocence Project on the psychological effects of unjust incarceration, and becoming the projects only non-lawyer-advisor.
Jerry had many passions: family, friends, food, music, travel, woodworking, and his commitment to the State of Israel were among his most important. His close friendships reach back to elementary school, summer camp, high school, college, and residency; he met monthly with his classmates from Harvard. He loved to travel and explore different cultures, with fluency in several languages.
Jerry is the beloved husband of Erika Keller Rogoff. Loving father of Erika & Rob Leavitt of Basalt, CO, Adam Rogoff & Rachel Walchak of Roslindale and Kevin Latner & Jane Li of Washington, DC. Dear grandfather to Ludovica, Leonardo, Eden Tess, Jordan, Arlo, Abraham and Esme. He is also survived by countless cousins, nieces and nephews. Loyal son of the late Abraham & Sarah Rogoff, he is also predeceased by his sister Evelyn.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00pm on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Levine Chapel, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline. Burial immediately following at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St, Newton Centre. Memorial observance at his late residence immediately following the burial through 7 p.m., and shiva at Adam & Rachel's home from 4-8:00p.m on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
