JOSEPH PETER LONGO, JR. March 22, 1938 ~ March 26, 2011
Joseph Peter Longo Jr., beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away suddenly in Pebble Beach, CA on March 26, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (Betty), daughters Victoria (Arpad) Vass, Susan (Joel) Durgavich, and son Joseph Peter Longo III, and five grandsons.
Joseph was born in Boston, Mass, and graduated from Boston Latin School in 1956. He holds an AB from Harvard College in International Studies, an MA from American University, an MPA from George Washington University, and a DPA from the University of Southern California Washington Public Affairs Center in Management Systems Analysis. He also completed studies at the National War College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Defense Systems Management College.
After a four-year tour of duty in the Air Force, he joined the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC, in 1960. as a production analyst for, Soviet aerodynamic systems. Other assignments included: desk officer for current reporting on Africa; long-range forecaster for global security trends; major substantive and conceptual contributions to the Joint Strategic Planning System; managing editor, current intelligence publications; chief, threat integration team, Directorate of Estimates; Dean, school of Intelligence Information Systems, and Special Assistant to the School of Intelligence Training. He also provided distinguished staff assistance to a DIA Director appearing before Congress, lecture support to DoD training and orientation programs, made significant advances in DIA's intelligence R&D efforts, and state-of-the-art technology transfers to DIA and DoD.
A distinct highlight of his career was his appearance as an expert witness, giving vital aid to the U.S. Government's successful prosecution of an espionage case. In addition to Joe's full-time distinguished federal career, he was also adjunct professor of management at both the University of Southern California's Washington Public Affairs Center and the Virginia Tech campus in northern Virginia.
He retired from federal service in 1993 and from the lengthy part-time academic positions in 1995. In 1996 Joe and Betty moved to Pebble Beach, California A true academician, Joe used his gifts in the intensive study of and teaching of the Bible in the Carmel Presbyterian Church Discovery Class, Carmel, CA.
