 This announcement of the death of our classmate, George W. Butterworth, was distributed to members of George's firm, Goodwin's Trust & Estate Planning of Boston.
I am saddened to share with you the news of the passing of George Butterworth, of counsel in Goodwin's Trusts & Estate Planning Practice in the Boston office. George died peacefully on December 26 following a lengthy illness.
George had a keen intellect and a dry wit and was regarded not only as an accomplished lawyer but a respected teacher and mentor who provided colleagues with lucid and erudite explanations. Even after his retirement, George continued to work and come into the office regularly because he cared so much for Goodwin and his clients.
He joined Goodwin in 1965 as an associate. He earned his LLB from Yale Law School in 1965 and his AB from Harvard College in 1960.
George was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America and was a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and served as its state laws coordinator for Massachusetts. He was a director and treasurer of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, secretary of the Harvard Musical Association, a director and clerk of Volunteers and Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands, a trustee and clerk of William Lawrence Camp and treasurer of Boston Fatherless and Widows Society. George also served as a trustee of the Boston Ballet, president of the Handel & Hayden Society, president of the Beacon Hill Nursery School, a trustee of the Park School and president of the Yale Law School Association of Massachusetts.
Funeral arrangements are pending. The family has requested that contributions may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society in honor of George.
